Mountain Trax to close doors after nearly 3 decades

After serving the cycling community since 1995, Mountain Trax in Berkshire will be closing its doors, with its final day of trading later this month, on Saturday 17 May 2025.

Paul Howard, who joined in 2008, has been the owner since 2020. He said: “I know this news will be a shock and disappointment to our customers… This has been a hard decision to make. But passion and hope are not enough when the numbers no longer stack up.

“Since 2022, global events have impacted consumer confidence, and we’ve seen a steady decline in retail. Despite careful cost management and strategic buying, factors such as rising costs, reduced sales across all retail sectors, and the broader economic climate have made the business unsustainable in the short to mid-term.

“Looking ahead to 2026, the industry outlook appears volatile, and lacking in growth.”

“Mountain Trax has always been more than just a bike shop. It’s been a hub for riders — whether to get a new bike perfectly set up, have a wheel trued, or just share stories from the trail over a cuppa. Those connections are what we’ll miss most. One legacy will proudly continue: Paul will remain involved in supporting the Mountain Trax Race Team, who now ride in our stunning new team strip by Stolen Goat.

“We want to thank all of our incredible customers — old and new — for your support over the years. A huge shout-out also goes to our fantastic team: Olly, Brad, Owen, and James. We’ve shared an amazing journey, and we’re closing with our heads held high.”

The shop is running down its remaining stock before hosting a final send-off on Saturday 17 May: “Expect cuppas, cakes, beer, and warm memories as we say goodbye.”

The firm noted that its workshop services, particularly in mountain bike servicing, remain in high demand and there’s an opportunity to buy the brand and service business to continue supporting the local ridership.
