Fabian Hamilton MP and Jesse Norman MP to head All Party Cycling Group

With the dust settling on the UK’s General Election, the All Party Parliamentary Group for Cycling and Walking has been inaugurated for the new Parliament.

The All Party Cycling and Walking group works on a cross-party basis to promote all forms of cycling and walking and will continue with its programme of work.

The inaugural meeting on Wednesday 24 July, confirmed that the group will now be co-chaired by Fabian Hamilton MP (who continues in the role) and Jesse Norman MP, who replaces Selaine Saxby, after she lost her seat at the General Election.

Jesse Norman is a familiar name to the cycle world. He has twice served as the Minister responsible for cycling and walking. He will take up the role on an interim basis, however. Andy McNae, the Labour Member of Parliament for Rossendale and Darwen will become Treasurer, whilst Olly Glover, the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for  Didcot and Wantage becomes Vice-Chair.

Last year, the group released a landmark report into the issue of road justice, and subsequently campaigned on the issue through meetings, Parliamentary questions, and a Westminster Hall debate. In this new Parliament, they already have a strong programme of events, we’re told, including a welcome reception for Members of Parliament taking place on the 10 September. There will also be meetings taking place on the subject of eBike batteries, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, and a major new report with British Cycling and Leigh Day. It may be unfair to examine this first press statement too closely, but nevertheless CIN notes that C2W reform wasn’t included on that short list.

Fabian Hamilton MP, co-chair of the APPG for Cycling and Walking said: I am delighted to continue in my role as co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Cycling and Walking. We will continue to work both inside and outside of Parliament to promote all forms of cycling and walking.

“A new Government provides new opportunities to ensure that as many people as possible are enabled to experience the many benefits of active travel. We look forward to an ambitious programme of work this year, and engaging with many of the new Members of Parliament elected in July.’’
