Tern unveils DIN 79010-tested third gen GSD Cargo Bike

Time flies and its been a good few years since Tern released its GSD (the 2nd gen landed five years ago) and now the brand has released its third generation GSD Cargo Bike.

Pitched as a compact yet powerful family cargo bike designed to carry two passengers, it’s also easy to ride, store and share. The original GSD was something of a cargo bike category pioneer, and Tern has aimed to raise the bar again with what it said is best-in-class hauling capacity, patented folding side deck and Bosch Smart System features like ABS braking, GPS tracking, and eBike Alarm. It’s also DIN 79010 tested.

“What’s new? Everything.”

“What’s new?” asked Joshua Hon, Tern Team Captain. “Everything. Pretty much every aspect of the bike has been redesigned to work better. From big improvements like handling when heavily loaded to small details like how much effort it takes to get the bike up on the kickstand or how seatpost levers are easier for small hands to operate, the new GSD is just better.”

The new GSD is stronger and sturdier, with what Tern said is a best-in-class 210 kg (463 lb) Max Gross Vehicle Weight, certified by DIN 79010 testing. The reinforced Atlas Lockstand supports up to 100 kg (221 lb), ensuring rock-solid parking for safer loading and unloading. A longer rear rack supports 100 kg (220 lb) and is roomy enough to comfortably hold two children or a large adult passenger. Need even more capacity? GSD’s integrated TowBar allows for easy attachment of a trailer.

A reinforced frame with larger-diameter hydroformed tubing increases stiffness, while a longer wheelbase and lower centre of gravity improve handling. The cargo-optimised geometry provides a more stable, confident ride with heavy loads or passengers.

All GSD models run on the smooth, reliable Bosch Cargo Line motor, with a choice of two proven eBike systems: eBike System 2 or the Smart System. Both deliver the same powerful, intuitive ride, while Smart System models add advanced security, safety and connectivity, said Tern.

Smart System features like GPS tracking, eBike Lock and eBike Alarm, provide extra layers of protection when locking down the GSD. Over-the-air updates deliver the latest features and performance improvements. Plus, Bosch ABS braking comes standard on Smart System models. In wet conditions, stop-and-go traffic, and unpredictable urban environments, Bosch ABS prevents front-wheel lockups and loss of traction. GSD fits Bosch ABS as standard on all Smart System models, giving riders additional peace of mind.

DIN 79010

Standards is an area CIN has been digging into lately and it’s worth noting that the GSD 3rd gen adheres to DIN 79010, as Hon explained: “DIN 79010 is the German safety standard for cargo bikes and it is the only national standard that tests bikes for loads above 120kg. Since DIN is, for now, the only cargo bike standard, any bike claiming a Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight above 120kg should minimally have their frame and fork tested to this standard. This is the only way to ensure long-term safety for a vehicle built to carry heavy
(and precious) loads.”

Rigorous DIN 79010 testing verifies the structural integrity of the GSD’s frame and fork under real-world conditions up to 210 kg (463 lb). Key components like the rear rack, kickstand, and braking system are tested under DIN 79010 to ensure they withstand heavy-duty daily use with passengers and cargo. Tern also conducts third-party testing on other mission-critical parts, including the handlepost, seatpost, pedals and wheels.

Cross-selling opportunities for shops

When it comes to additional sales opportunities for bike shops, the GSD has an expanding accessory ecosystem, to customise it for carrying cargo, passengers or both. These now include:

● Stow Decks – Lock at 5 different angles to support loaded panniers, cargo or serve as passenger footrests, while neatly folding away when not in use.
● Sun Shield – Blocks UV rays on long sunny rides while allowing airflow to keep the kiddies cool. Side panels roll up for ventilation.
● Rain Shield – Snaps over the Sun Shield for full rain protection. Easily stores in a pannier when not in use.
● Cargo Hold 52 Panniers – Extra-large 52 L capacity (per side), waterproof construction, and multiple carrying modes for versatile, all-weather hauling.

“But where am I going to park it?”

One of the practical questions any prospective cargo bike purchaser has to consider at some point, is where do I leave it? Often bulky and left outdoors, cargo bikes are potential catnip to bike thieves, yet Tern has a solution for that, with a compact size and smart design, making indoor parking easier. Vertical Rolling lets you roll it on its rear wheels into small elevators. Indoor storage options keep it out of sight: Vertical Park the GSD upright in a space no bigger than a grocery bag, or FlatFold it into a slim, compact package that fits behind a sofa.

The GSD is built to last, and so is Tern’s commitment to keeping it on the road, with a 7-Year Support programme, essential replacement parts, including key drivetrain, braking and electronic components, will remain available for years to come. As cargo bikes become an everyday transportation solution, riders can count on Tern’s long-term support to protect their investment and keep them rolling, the brand said.
