Tern Warranty Transfer Programme launched as eBike market matures

A confidence-boosting Tern Warranty Transfer Programme has been launched by the brand – reportedly among the first in the industry – allowing the original owner of a Tern bike to transfer the warranty to a new owner when selling the bike. The programme applies to all Tern bikes, regardless of purchase date, and covers the remaining duration of the original warranty, which provides up to 10 years of support.

Tern said the move comes as the eBike market matures: with more people relying on eBikes, especially electric cargo bikes, for daily transportation, owner expectations are changing – akin to the car market, arguably. The bikes are becoming essential vehicles for commuting, school runs and errands, driving demand for more reliable, higher-performance bikes backed by long-term support.

“Tern bikes are built to last through years of hard use,” said Josh Hon, Tern Team Captain. “But we understand that life may change for the original owner, and that they might want to sell their bike or upgrade to a new one. Our goal is to reduce friction and deliver value for both the original owner and the new owner. The Warranty Transfer Programme does this.”

The Tern Warranty Transfer Program is especially valuable for critical components like the frame and fork, which carry an extended 10-year warranty for bikes registered within 30 days of the original purchase.

Who Benefits?

Aside from the obvious benefits for sellers and second-hand buyers, Tern notes there are dealer benefits too. When selling, an authorised Tern dealer should inspect and report to confirm the bike’s condition, making the sale smoother and more trustworthy: “For dealers, the Warranty Transfer Programme creates an important touchpoint opportunity with new owners. As part of the transition, dealers can help with fittings or accessories based on the new rider’s needs, while establishing an ongoing relationship for maintenance and warranty support. In cases where they take the bike as a trade-in, they also benefit from a higher selling price.”

Earlier this year, Tern launched its 7-Year Support Programme, pledging the availability of critical replacement parts like batteries and electronics for at least seven years on all qualified Tern bikes. This ensures that riders can maintain and repair their bikes long after purchase, keeping them reliable and roadworthy.

The new Warranty Transfer Programme builds on that foundation by allowing remaining warranty coverage to be passed on to a new owner, Tern said: “Together, these programs show Tern’s commitment to supporting every stage of ownership, helping bikes stay useful and supported well beyond the first few years, and not only for the original owner.

“The combination of Tern’s 7-Year Support and Warranty Transfer programs represents a shift toward a more sustainable approach to product ownership. It’s not just about designing products that are built to last, but also about finding ways to help bikes stay safely on the road and well-supported far longer than the typical industry standard, while reducing unnecessary waste.”
