BIXI launches bike trailers to expand urban mobility in Montréal

BIXI, a non-profit organisation responsible for managing bikesharing services in Canada, has launched trailers designed to be integrated into a bike-sharing network.

Now available in Montréal, these trailers are compatible with BIXI’s regular bikes, eBikes, and even users’ personal bicycles. Each unit comes with a padlock system, allowing users to secure the trailer during stops such as errands or daily activities.

The service is designed for ease of use: users can rent a trailer via the BIXI app, attach it to their bike of choice, and return it to any BIXI station once finished.

An initial rollout of 10 trailers has begun, with the total expected to reach 50 units by the end of the summer.

“We’re not just offering bike-sharing, we’re creating a true urban mobility ecosystem. This new addition is a testament to our ongoing commitment to pushing boundaries and innovation,” said Christian Vermette, General Manager of BIXI Montreal.

Every element of the trailer has been engineered with bike-sharing needs in mind, offering a balance of durability, safety, lightness, maneuverability and wide compatibility. It has been field-tested under real-world urban conditions to ensure it can handle the demands of daily use in Montréal.

In 2025, the BIXI network will expand to 12,600 bicycles—3,200 of which will be electric—across 1,080 stations in 13 cities. Montréal is currently home to the largest fleet of electric bikes in Canada.
