Burley issues recall notice on Ballz QR Skewers

Cycle trailer specialist Burley has issued a recall on its Ballz QR quick release Skewer, as sold with products between August of 2018 and June of 2021.

Burley has identified a weakness in the connection that could “cause instability of the trailer and the towing bicycle and pose a fall hazard for the bicycle rider.” Various warranty reports suggest that the axle portion of the Ballz QR unit can shear on initial installation, or during use. This results in the possibility of the associated Coho XC Cargo Trailer becoming partially separated from the bicycle. In this instance the two tow arms would maintain the connection, but the system would not function as intended.

The brand wrote on its homepage: “All users should immediately stop using the Ballz QR Skewer. Burley will provide a replacement skewer free of charge.

“The skewers affected by this recall include all Ballz QR Skewers that were sold as individual components as well as Ballz QR Skewers that were included in the sale of the Coho XC Trailer (Model No. 935101).

“ONLY the Burley Ballz QR skewer is affected. Burley Ballz Thru Axles and Nutted Adapters are safe to use with the Coho XC cargo trailer.”

The replacement skewers will be issued free of charge to customers completing a recall replacements form, with stock due to become available from September.

Raleigh is Burley’s distributor for the UK and Ireland.
