Cyclists average 115 mins a ride, largely on Sunday, especially in August

Fresh data from Garmin has illuminated some UK and overseas cyclist habits, revealing that (Garmin) cyclists spent around 115 minutes on average on each ride, recording rides usually on Sundays, with the most popular month being August – data that might be conceivably be useful for bike shops.

The stats also revealed that the average bike ride per user was 28.59 miles – riders in Italy ate up the highest average miles per ride (34.73), with Belgium and then Spain following. Those aged 20–29 and 60–69 both rode just over 30 miles per ride, while those ages 30–39 and 40–49 rode just over 26 miles per ride on average. The average speed was 14.89 mph, with an average climb of 1,158 feet per ride.

Garmin also shared some interesting running insights: Nearly two thirds of Brits (63%) identify as runners, with a surge in new runners revealing a fifth of people (20%) saying they only started running within the last six to 11 months. That’s conceivably also useful info for bike shops looking to add some running product into their range mix.

Technology played a major role in the running boom – four in five runners (81%) regularly checked their stats on smartwatches, fitness bands or apps, and over two fifths of runners (43%) said they would not go for a run if they could not track it. Noted that a wearable tech brand absolutely would say that, but nevertheless it’s an interesting finding and would be interesting to compare if cyclist were so technology orientated as runners.

Last year, Garmin introduced the Rally 110 and 210. The brand is distributed to the UK trade via Madison.
