Design and Innovation Award win for world’s first plastic free bike cleaner

Muc-Off, makers of the world’s first plastic-free bike cleaner, Punk Powder, have scooped an award win at the Design & Innovation Awards 2022.

Punk Powder is part of a wider sustainability ethos, outlined in the brands 2020 launch of Project Green, an initiative aimed at saving 200 tonnes of plastics, through packaging swaps and product innovations. To date the brand has already removed over 136 tonnes.

The ingrained ‘Project Green’ ethos means Punk Powder:

  • Uses 92% less packaging than the equivalent two 1L bottles of Nano Tech Cleaner
  • Contains readily biodegradable ingredients
  • Can be mixed in an old Muc-Off plastic bottle, maximising reusability of existing plastic products
  • Is also offered with an aluminium ‘Bottle for Life’, further removing plastic packaging.

As is also pointed out in the award winning announcement, the packaging for the concentrated, powdered cleaner consists of recycled cardboard printed with plant-based ink, which, in sachet form, also reduces its CO2 footprint compared to the shipping of filled bottles.

Also worth noting; Powder Punk is cheaper than the equivalent 2 x 1L bottles of cleaner.

Developing a business with sustainability is at the core, Muc-Off have systematically removed PTFEs from lubes, and reduced plastic across the range. Winning at the Design & Innovation Awards 2022 comes as a result of significant environmental and sustainability developments Muc-Off has modelled its business around.
