Evans Cycles opens with Sports Direct for the first time

Evans Cycles looks to open alongside a Sports Direct store for the first time.

Coming nine months after Evans was rescued from administration by Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley, a retail unit in Coney Street, York appears destined to bring the two brands together on the high street for the first time.

Occupying a former BHS site, York Press reports the unit now has signage preparing locals for the arrival of a new Sports Direct outlet, while another entrance to the store states: “Evans Cycles coming soon”. The unit has lain empty for years and earlier this year acquired by Sports Direct Group.

Ever since Mike Ashley moved for Evans Cycles, pundits have predicted that the Evans Cycles brand would be accommodated within some Sports Directs stores. The indications for such a move were there earlier this year, when TRI UK – another Mike Ashley-owned retailer – opened an Evans Cycles ‘brand store’ within its Shirebrook store.
