Gates delves into e-Motorcycle, e-Scooter & LEV markets

In an attempt to build upon its success in the bicycle market, Gates is developing advanced drivetrain solutions for electric motorcycles, e-Scooters and wider light electric vehicle (LEV) marketplace.

Since launching the Gates Carbon Drive for bicycles 12 years ago, the company’s prime focus now rests on e-mobility with a newly expanded product range to be exhibited at this year’s Eurobike show.

General Manager of Gates Carbon Drive and Global Mobility, Joe Menzel, explained: “Bicycles and electric bikes have proven the durability and strength of our clean and low-maintenance belt drive system. Now we are using that expertise to develop advanced drivetrain solutions for the rapidly evolving micromobility marketplace.”

During the show Gates will exhibit its largest ever portfolio of products, including an array of e-Bikes and, for the first time at Eurobike, a high-torque Zero SR/F electric motorcycle.

The range includes new belts, sprockets and cranksets alongside more than 60 unique spider assembly options for Bosch 2020 Performance Line Speed, Line CX, Cargo Line and Cargo Line Speed systems. Gates is also offering over 35 unique spider assemblies for Shimano STEPS mid-motors.

Also newly introduced will be the CDC rear sprocket line which provides designers of lower-torque mid-motor e-Bikes with a value alternative to the brand’s premium CDX line, designed to meet the demands of urban e-Bikes of 50Nm or less. Also new to the range are two new premium CDX belt lengths, two additional CDX front sprocket sizes and an expanded range of rear sprockets for Shimano Di2 and Nexus Inter-5E hubs.

“Our engineering team works extremely hard to ensure that Gates Carbon Drive is compatible with every top-tier internal shifting system and all of the top mid-motor electric drive systems,” Menzel continued. “Our goal is to provide the products that allow designers to make any style of bike belt-driven.

“Europe and Eurobike remain our most important marketplace because they are global trendsetters. Gates is thankful to the European consumers and bike brands that have joined our mission to make bicycling simpler, more practical and inclusive.”

At booth A2-201 at Eurobike, Gates will be showcasing a wide range of models across all styles, from full-suspension e-MTBs to speed pedelecs, urban commuters, cargo, BMX, touring and MTBs from a dozen brands. The bikes will be equipped with Bosch, Brose, Shimano and Yamaha mid-motor systems as well as internal gear hub and gearbox technology from the likes of Shimano, Enviolo, Rohloff and Pinion.
