Tern unveils all-terrain adventure cargo bike, Orox

Tern’s brand new Orox is an adventure cargo bike designed for any terrain, any weather condition and optimised to haul a passenger, a four-legged friend or a heavy load of cargo.

Featuring a robust, longtail frame built for heavy hauling, it sports a dual-battery capability and an efficient Bosch motor, giving Orox a range of up to 300 km (200 miles), opening the door to adventures to rarely travelled places.

The bike’s genesis came from Tern’s successful GSD and a realisation that riders might want similar features from an eCargobike suited for off-roading.

Tern Team Captain Josh Hon explained: “Five years ago, we introduced the GSD with the vision that an easy-to-ride bike capable of carrying passengers and cargo would get people out of their cars and onto bikes. We were right, and we love seeing all the amazing things people are doing with the GSD. But we also realised that not all of the places people want to go have smooth pavement, or even pavement at all. For all those places, another type of vehicle would be needed, and that vehicle is the Orox. Welcome to our vision of the ultimate Adventure Cargo bike.”

Go Anywhere

Traditional cargo bikes face limitations on unpaved roads, while off-road bikes struggle to carry substantial cargo. Orox was designed to bring cargo bike utility to all types of terrain. With massive tyres and a powerful Bosch motor, Orox offers excellent traction and comfort on the most challenging surfaces. Whether it’s negotiating poorly maintained urban streets during the week or exploring an old logging trail on a weekend ride and camp to a remote lake, Orox can handle it all, says the brand.

“Combining the ruggedness of a mountain bike, versatility of a trekking bike, and convenience of a cargo bike, Orox provides riders with the freedom to create their own adventures.”

Cargo bikes often sit idle when conditions get messy with snow, ice, or rain. But Orox has been designed so nasty conditions won’t get in the way, any time of year.

Extra-wide tires work in most conditions; but if extreme conditions require special tyres, the frame and fork of the Orox are designed to let riders swap in their choice of 26 x 5″, 27.5 x 4″ or 29 x 2.6″ tires. Heavy-duty fenders keep riders dry when conditions get sloppy, while the insulated Frame Pack keeps the battery working optimally when the temperature drops. The Orox is pitched as capable of tackling snow in winter, mud in spring, sand in summer, or off-road terrain when camping in autumn.

Cargo

Orox is a heavy-duty hauler with a max gross vehicle weight capacity of 210 kg (462 lb) on-road and 180 kg (396 lb) off-road. Urban riders can transition from an effortless morning school run to a fun date-night ride along a favourite river trail, it said.

Businesses can deploy the Orox in a diverse set of environments, from hauling tools for trail maintenance to carrying medical equipment at concert venues and sporting events. Adventure seekers can extend backcountry excursions by bringing more supplies, or pamper themselves by packing extra comforts such as a favorite cast-iron skillet. A full selection of accessories also means riders can immediately deck out their Orox rig to fit their varied needs.
