Bicycle Association publishes guide to cycle security and theft

The enduring topic of cycle theft and security is the focus of a new industry focused-guide from the Bicycle Association, part of a suite of BA guides available to download for free.

The BA Guide to Cycle Security and Tackling Theft.

The BA Guides are a series of concise documents aiming to offer definitive information on matters of interest to the UK cycle industry.

This guide covers:

  • The problems that cycle theft causes;
  • How the industry can help to tackle the issue;
  • What to cover with customers in-store

The cycle industry’s approach and attitude to bike theft has been under some examination by authorities in the past. The problem of cycle thefts is believed to be significantly underreported – official stats for 2021 suggest a decline in cycle thefts.

The National Crime Survey reported 275,000 thefts in the year to March 2020. With many victims failing to report the theft of their bike it is likely that more than 300,000 bicycles are stolen in the UK each year. An investigation last year revealed that 87% of UK neighbourhoods saw not a single bike theft solved by police. The industry recognises that theft is a major problem and is determined to tackle it, said the BA.

Stephen Holt, Retail Trade Manager at The Bicycle Association, said: “We are pleased to present this new guide, which outlines what retailers can do to help tackle the ongoing issue of cycle theft.”

All of the BA Guides are available on the BA website for download.
