Cargo bike controversies and case studies at 2nd Cargo Bike Sharing Europe conference

You can probably gauge the level of interest in the cargo bike and mobility market by the sheer number of conferences, expos and events now dedicated to the sector. While not all of them are in Europe, many of them are, including on 24 May 2023, when the second Cargo Bike Sharing Europe conference will be taking place at Cologne’s polisMOBILITY trade fair.

The role of cities play in successful cargo bike sharing systems will be a key focus, with the conference leaning in on the example of host city Cologne, which has eCargo bikes integrated into its public sharing system, since December 2022. Over 160 cities in Germany have cargo bike sharing systems available.

This one-day conference will bring together cities (not literally), companies and activists for an overview of concepts and trends in the field. That will include a look at hardware and software solutions for cargo bike fleets, how to make cargo bikes “for all” and overcome diversity challenges, case studies and even a look at cargo bike sharing controversies. There’ll also be a bike tour through Cologne and an evening event at muli-cycle.

Organised by German bicycle industry association Zukunft Fahrrad and Berlin-based agency cargobike.jetzt, partners include the European Cyclists’ Federation, Cycling Industries Europe and the Association of Bicycle-Friendly Cities in North Rhine-Westphalia (AGFS).

“Innovative mobility services such as cargo bike sharing are increasingly important for sustainable transport and the cycling industry,” said Wasilis von Rauch, Managing Director of Zukunft Fahrrad. “Cities have a key role to play and are therefore at the centre of the conference.”

AGFS chair Christine Fuchs added: “User-friendly and affordable systems motivate a broad range of people to use comfortable cargo bikes instead of cars, e.g. for child transport and grocery shopping. The conference offers cities a platform to get into the topic and plan their own cargo bike sharing systems.”
