Classified Power hub efficiency data released (we pause for a Hambini response)

Classified has released a white paper outlining the research carried out, and testing methodology used, to substantiate the claim that the Classified Power hub is, “the most efficient internal gear hub ever created.”

Whilst the announcement states that, ‘For the first time since the introduction of the Powershift hub, Belgian technology company Classified has released key measurement data that proves the efficiency of the Powershift hub.’ the move to publish testing methodology, and results, likely comes after prominent industry commentator, and engineer, Hambini, questioned the efficiency – expressed as ‘power train losses’ – of the Power hub system.

Roëll van Druten, Classified CTO, in office clothes, perched on a bike, leaning against a wallIn todays announcement, Classified CTO Roëll van Druten explains the background of the testing: “Drawing on our experience in the automotive industry, Classified has tested the Powershift hub to the highest standards, using a test rig specifically designed to measure power loss with a maximum error of 0.1%. The results of these tests show that the hub is 99.8% efficient in the 1:1 ratio, the same as a DT Swiss 240 hub (industry standard) measured on the same test-rig, and 99.2% efficient in the 0.7 ratio, making Classified’s hub the most efficient internal gear hub ever created.”

Van Druten is also keen to point out that the proven efficiency data is only part of the benefits that Classified’s Powershift technology can offer:  “Next to the overall efficiency increases, one the biggest advantages are the lightning fast shifting under full load and ultimate control of gearing choices.”

In 2023, Classified has made its mark on the professional racing scene, with Victor Campenaerts using Powershift technology at World Tour level, Kyle Smith using the technology to win Ironman events, and Rob Britton winning the ultra-distance gravel race Badlands.

With the launch of specific mountain bike XC and triathlon products in summer 2023, Classified is now present in the 4 main disciplines of cycling – Road, Gravel, MTB and Triathlon/TT.
