European pre-owned bike marketplace buycycle makes move into US

Marketplace for high value, pre-owned bikes buycycle is making a move across the Atlantic to reach the US cycle market from its German HQ.

Having listed over 15,000 pre-owned and refurbished bikes on its platform, which is live in 30 countries so far, buycycle is hoping to grab some share of the US market which was $12 billion in 2021, according to Grand View Research. While even an optimist would feel obliged to point out that 2021’s cycle market was considerably more buoyant than 2023’s, the future of North America’s cycle market is expected to grow (by CAGR 8.8% by 2030, so said Grand View Research).

Launched 2021, buycycle said it guarantees buyer protection, insurance and provides a safe space for cycling enthusiasts to buy and sell their bikes.

CEO and Co-Founder Theo Golditchuk explained: “Since we launched buycycle in 2021, we have grown super fast across Europe. The strong demand in the US took us by surprise – we noticed an uptick in organic sales which showed us that there is a big interest in pre-owned bikes and the need for a platform where people can buy and sell them safely and conveniently. We have built a dedicated US team to launch the market and are incredibly excited to expand the success we have witnessed in Europe.”

Marketplace retail has undergone a significant rise in popularity, with the like of eBay and Amazon among those which have made international waves in the space over the last deade ofr so. Sector-specific marketplaces have also sprung up more recently, with the likes of Manomano and B&Q in the DIY/home improvement space. The cycle market has seen some players come and go in this space, while some bricks and mortar bike shops have been offering second hand bike sales for decades. buycycle competitors include Cycle Exchange and Bike-room, the latter re-selling ex-pro bikes.
