Ireland’s former Trek distributor Centro goes bust

The former partner for Trek in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Centro, has closed, reports Sticky Bottle.

In business since 1966, the distributor handled other significant labels, including the Dawes portfolio, as well as hosting house-designed labels Jupiter, Imagine and Planet. Weldtite, Velox, Dawes, Union and Peruzzo are among those accessories brands also carried by the firm.

The Dublin distributor was a major player in Ireland, with a substantial dealerbase both sides of the border, even acquiring a handful of its own stores. However, it is understood that the business struggled with the slowdown in independent bicycle dealer trade and in particular its loss of Trek, which now ships direct in the territory.

When called this morning there was no answer from Centro, though dealer accounts have confirmed the closure, with one account telling CI.N that the firm was often overly generous with its payment terms.
