Madison and PEARL iZUMi part ways, brand sells HQ and trims staff

Madison will no longer be the UK distributor for American cycle apparel brand PEARL iZUMi and will instead focus on Shimano apparel and Madison Clothing.

The news quickly follows a shake up following the brand’s acquisition, from Shimano, by United Sports Brands, where local news reports the PEARL iZUMi will sell its headquarters and trim staff levels. Some consolidation of the operations is now expected, with remaining staff handed the option to work remotely, or move to the United Sports Brands HQ in California.

Madison’s statement on the parting of ways reads:

Madison has been the exclusive distributor for PEARL iZUMi apparel and footwear since 2009. During this time, Madison has worked tirelessly and invested heavily to establish and build the brand awareness in the UK and Ireland. Over the years, Madison has sponsored many athletes as well as the Tour of Britain and the Tour Series and even opened a standalone outlet retail store in Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth to support its established retail dealer network.

Dominic Langan, CEO at Madison said: “We have seen the global cycle clothing market change dramatically over the last 13 years as the industry has grown, as fabric technology has advanced but we have also seen a change in consumer and retailer behaviour when it comes to the purchasing and selling of premium apparel.

“In May 2022, United Sports Brands purchased PEARL iZUMi USA from Shimano and whilst we are pleased to understand the new owners have ambitious plans for the future of the brand, we have taken the decision that Madison will not be joining them for this next chapter.

“We wish the team at Pearl Izumi USA and at USB the very best of success for the future.”

Madison will continue to support warranty until the end of 2022 and will continue to focus on the Shimano range of softgoods and apparel and Madison Clothing.
