Bafang to offer automated heavy load cargo bike transmission

Electric bike motor maker Bafang will soon come to market with an automated cargo bike transmission designed for the rigours of the heavy-load logistics.

Addressing a market for payloads of between 500kg and a tonne, the system teased today is likely tilted toward catering for the industrial side of the marketplace, which is increasingly counting top-tier logistics providers as fleet vehicle customers.

The announcement is not yet complete and in fact we have only been handed a few paragraphs of detail on the prototype and its objectives ahead of full market release.

The OEM supplier writes: “Bafang is working very intensively on developing solutions to meet the requirements that are placed on these “last-mile” transport vehicles, which in turn are helping to meet requirements around the world for CO2 emissions reduction. Through close exchange between the R&D department, users and manufacturers, Bafang gained valuable knowledge and insights, for the effective investigation and development of a new technical milestone.”

The cargo bike transmission, we’re told, will be adaptable for either chain or belt drive applications. The firm says otherwise that the “new 3-speed automatic transmission (has) integrated differential mesh series and reverse gear forms; the ideal system solution with a powerful and reliable mid-engine!”

Bafang has sales and service centres in the Netherlands, the USA, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, and Taiwan/China. The newly opened plant in Poland focuses on the production of mid-motor systems for the European markets.
