Brose win award for eBike drive remanufacturing process

German eBike motor manufacturer Brose has announced that it received the Altair Enlighten Award for the remanufacturing process of eBike drives.

Background to the award

On August 1, global technology company Altair presented this year’s Altair Enlighten Award in Michigan, USA, to companies in the automotive industry that are making significant progress in lightweight construction and sustainability.

In the category “Sustainable Process” Brose E-Bike took second place with its Remanufacturing program. With the “Reman Drive”, Brose state they are the first eBike drive manufacturer ever to make it possible to reuse individual assemblies and components from old drives.

“The business is rightly proud to, through this process, make more sustainable mobility possible.  Receiving this award is recognition for work the team have carried out to make this possible.”

The project, in detail

For the project, Brose takes used components, which are disassembled, cleaned, and repaired if necessary, and then uses these, with current components, in a new product.

Electronic components, signal transmitter disc, torque sensor and sockets are suitable for this.

A visual inspection of the relevant parts is followed by a functional test and thorough cleaning. In order to be able to be installed again, the components have to meet many requirements. For this purpose, Brose has developed a so-called “flash tool” that checks the electronics and can measure different operating points.

Once the components are tested for various parameters, and complemented with current components to create a new product, the units go on sale under the “Remanufactured” label.

“With this program, we are currently the only manufacturer who is actually putting the topic of remanufacturing into practice,” states the business.

“The development of recyclable products is an important element of Brose’s sustainability strategy. With the excellent process, (we) have shown how this can be successfully implemented in practice.” Thomas Forster,  Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer (CCRO), Brose Group.
