New products: Gigapower’s braking breakthrough, Scope adds disc wheels, Pivot’s Mach 5.5 and Smith’s Attack glasses

Product sneak peaks set for market from the end of summer are filtering through at a steadily increasing pace, but which are worth your store’s consideration? Here’s a few that have caught our eye this week:

Scope Disc Wheels
Available in the UK via OneWay Distribution: +31 10 340 3500 scope

Soon to be available from the OneWay Distribution stable, Scope has added a new disc brake series.

This addition has been able to come to fruition after a year and a half of development in the Netherlands where Scope has taken on board experience from its sponsored athletes, as well as spending extensive testing time in its in-house test lab.

The new disc brake series is developed from scratch. As with the updated rim brake series, the aerodynamics, stiffness, and weight are all optimized. The rim width measures 26 mm and the wheels come tubeless ready.

The retail price for the updated rim brake version, as well as the new disc brake wheelset will be the same as the current price, namely €1,398.

The wheels will be shown to the industry at the Eurobike show, though will be available from June with dealer orders accepted now.

Smith Attack performance glasses
Available in the UK via Ultra Sport Europe: 01332 813 150

Ready for spring/summer sales, Smith Optics has brought forward the Attack and Attack Max, each offered in two sizes.smith

The glasses are the beneficiaries of Smith’s new MAG interchangeable technology with proprietary ChromaPop lenses; a magnet-based innovation that enables fast lens swapping for varying light conditions with a simple click. The MAG system is built directly into the temple to allow for a vast field of view in a rimless frame design. Additionally, the hidden interchangeability system reduces the stress and tension on the temples and lens structure to provide exceptional optics while offering a quick and secure connection.

Each model is offered in one of three ChromaPop performance lens options – revealing natural colour, enhanced visual clarity and greater definition of objects – and all include a secondary ChromaPop Contrast Rose flash lens for addressing low light conditions. The lenses have been crafted with a lowered-brow design for increased ventilation while the two-position adjustable nose piece provides a perfect fit. The nose piece and temples are comprised of Megol which reacts to perspiration by gently adhering to the skin for a comfortable, no slip fit

The new Attack and Attack Max (MSRP $250, including two ChromaPop lenses and a hard case) will be available in July 2017 at select retailers worldwide and online at smithoptics.com.

Pivot Cycles Mach 5.5
Available in the UK via Upgrade Bikes: 01403 711611

Announced this week is Pivot’s answer to a trail bike better suited to the typical conditions for the UK, the all new 140mm rear travel Mach 5.5.

Built around a carbon chassis and with a 160mm fork up front, the frame is built for 27.5″ wheels and capable of hosting a tyre measuring 2.6″ wide.

“The original Mach 5.7 Carbon was the most popular, best loved bike we’ve ever produced. We wanted to update the design, and knew that it had to be absolutely perfect for all the riders out there waiting for the next generation,” said Pivot Cycles President and CEO, Chris Cocalis. “The Mach 5.5 Carbon embodies everything that made the original rise above the competition, with key updates to make it a true next-generation trail bike – it features our trail-adapted long and low geometry, an evolved mid-travel linkage for incredible small bump compliance, an all-new carbon layup with lighter weight, higher modulus materials, and clearance for up to 2.6” wide tires.”

The Mach 5.5 Carbon is offered in five sizes to fit riders from 4’11” to 6’7”. Every size option, including size XS, fits a full size water bottle inside the front triangle. It is available as a complete bike, with builds weighing under 27lbs (12.2kg), complete with dropper, and with frame weights as low as 5.2lbs(2.35kg).

The Mach 5.5 Carbon complete bike is available immediately in two color options (black or red), and in nine different Shimano or SRAM configurations ranging from $4,899 to $10,199 USD. It is also available as a frameset for $3,099.

Gigapower ceramic fibre brake shoes
Available via Town and Country Cycles: 0800 644 2444 yeh

Gigapower has come up with a series of new braking items that are said to guarantee no squealing and high performance, even on greasy rims.

The company uses a semi-flexible ceramic fiber compound
it calls Gigapower Ceramic, which founder Chun Ling Yeh said is comprised of more than 40 organic ingredients.

“It stands for being squeal-proof, not overheating rims, and being as good as metal compounds,” he said. “Meanwhile, disc pads are carbonized and sintered at 350 degrees C [662 degrees F] For 15 hours, creating a stable compound.”

He said extreme temperatures or weather conditions have no effect on the performance or stability of the disc pads. OEM interest thus far is said to be high.

Town and Country Cycles Ltd have been the sole importer and distributor for Gigapower and supply the Independent Bike trade on a direct to dealer basis so any dealers interested in finding out more should contact Gigapower on 0800 644 2444 or info@gigapower.co.uk
