PON.bike 600,000 bike production unit gains build permits

Kalkhoff and Cannondale parent PON.Bike has gained the necessary construction permits for its build partner 2L Architects UAB to begin working on the facility.

Announced in January and touted to be capable of a production of up to 600,000 cycles and electric bikes per annum, the manufacturing plant is due for a 2024 completion, all being well with the build. As part of the expansion it is expected that the facility will require up to 500 staff, which would see the Pon.Bike global workforce approach 3,000 people. That tally was added to significantly on the back of the buyout of Dorel Sports in October of 2021.

Speaking on its social media last week, 2L Architects UAB wrote “And then the day dawns, as this one, when we receive good news, colleagues congratulate each other, and we can enjoy the fruits of work together with you. The project of the Pon.Bike plant, the world leader in the bicycle industry, is moving forward – today we have received a construction permit and are waiting for the earthworks to start soon! Other exciting news is the completion of the Breeam project sustainability study in order to obtain an excellent assessment of the assessment scale and a certificate, which proves that the building meets the highest environmental and responsible management standards.”

Breeam, an abbreviation of ‘Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method’, is described as the world’s longest established method of assessing and certifying the sustainability credentials in construction.

PON.Bike will set its production in the Free Economic Zone of Kedainlai, about 220 kilometres from the Baltic Sea port at Klaipeda.
