Repairable e-bike battery biz secures £2.75 million funding

Bordeaux-based Gouach have raised £2.75 million (€3.3 million) in funding, led by French VC source Breega, along with the New Aquitaine region and Bpifrance.

After 18 months of development, Gouach founders, Alexandre Vallette, Maxime Agor and Maël Primet developed a patented battery design enabling them to, “…reduce by 80% the environmental impact of lithium batteries.”

Produced a unique product, aimed specifically at the e-mobility market, the unit has been designed to be manufactured as a solderless battery, which, Gouach states, makes it repairable in less than 10 minutes.

The battery, designed for e-bike, e-scooter, and SEV applications is a patented system of replacement cells. With lithium-ion cells now replaceable, the Battery Management System (BMS) is guaranteed for 10 years.

Breega founding and managing partner Maximilien Bacot comments, “Gouach is the first European company to tackle the problem of battery obsolescence in the micro-mobility sector in depth. It’s patented, smart and repairable battery is a must-have for micro-mobility manufacturers and suppliers, allowing them to reduce both costs and carbon footprint,”

This most recent announcement follows the launch of a partnership between Gouach and micromobility providers Dott.

With Deloitte predicting e-bike sales to reach 40 million units in 2023, battery design, serviceability, and recycling remain a hot topic of conversation.
