Shimano Essa labelled affordable entry-level 8 speed drivetrain
Shimano’s new component system, ESSA, is compatible with the component maker’s current 8-speed flat-bar ACERA, ALTUS and TOURNEY TX systems. There’s also a new iteration of its short reach range.
Labelled affordable by the brand, Essa is also pitched as accessible componentry that “harmonises an often-complex set of component groups”, simplifying Shimano’s product line-up for the next generation of cyclists.
Using the ‘Essence of Active’ concept, ESSA is ideal for a wide range of casual sport bikes, including MTB, fitness and city bikes. The narrow / wide teeth profile provide reliable chain retention on the trail, said the brand, while the front single 8-speed gear range will boast a 400% wider gear range.
Compatibility with Shimano’s current 8-speed HYPERGLIDE systems should make life easier for bike retailers and cycling enthusiasts alike.
ESSA branded products will only include the rear derailleur and front crank, based on the existing HYPERGLIDE platform, and seamlessly integrate with the existing SHIMANO branded products in that range.
Short reach CUES
In 2023, SHIMANO launched the CUES 11/10/9-speed line-up, providing one solution across multiple cycling categories, including trekking and mountain biking. This year, Shimano is expanding the line-up to include an updated ergonomic design, optimised for riders with smaller hands.
With a distinctive push/push shifter and two thumb-accessible buttons close to the grip, shifting becomes more intuitive and comfortable.
Complementing the arrival of Essa and the increased diversity now available for all riders using CUES, Shimano’s non-series front hubs and freehubs will be completely renewed across its 11/10/9/8-speed line-up. All non-series front hubs and FREEHUBS will be concentrated around a simple line-up.
The sealing performance of the TC600, TC/QC500 series will include labyrinth and contact seal bearings – designed to endure extreme torque levels for aggressive trail riding. The QC400 series will feature contact seal bearings only, while the QC300 series retain the traditional cup and cone bearings.
Designed for reliable eBike use, the FH600 and FH500 FREEHUBS with MICROSPLINE will be compatible with Shimano LINKGLIDE 11-speed hubs and can be easily upgraded from LINKGLIDE to HYPERGLIDE+ 12-speed—creating peace of mind for riders and bike mechanics when it comes to any after service maintenance of the hubs.
