Tektro debuts e-bike specific 9-speed drivetrain components

Tektro, working in partnership with German e-bike specialist Conway bikes, has launched a 9-speed, electric bike specific shifter, rear derailleur, and cassette; the E-Drive 9, or ED 9.

The product group aim is to improved serviceability and durability of components based on e-bike specific wear characteristics, whilst also reducing lifetime ownership costs for customers riding more affordable e-bikes.

With this aim in mind, Tektro has delivered a cassette with a three ratio cluster, which is independently replaceable (the 11-13-16 smallest sprockets) of the main cassette body, specifically addressing wear characteristics widely identified as electric bike specific. The 11-46 cassette has also been paired with a rear derailleur featuring a clutch mechanism, as is typically seen on more performance oriented components, again with the focus on enhancing durability through improved performance, whilst reducing long-term cost of ownership.

At present Tektro plan for ED 9 components to only be available as OEM for manufacturers of electric bikes.

Launched in 2017, the Tektro E-Bike Solutions division was created in response to customer requests for more electric bike specific robustness of components, across Tektro TRP brake systems, and, with the launch of ED 9, entry level drive train parts. Typically pedal assist drivetrains will experience different torque levels and thus need adaptation to promote longevity.

Early in 2020 CyclingIndustry.News visited Tektro in Taiwan to learn about the component maker’s expansion plans beyond its traditional braking goods and deeper into the drivetrain marketplace. Dirk Belling, Global Marketing and Brand Director of Tektro / TRP gave more insight on the future direction here.
