UCI fully authorises disc use for road and BMX racing

From July 1st the UCI will officially permit disc brake use in both road and BMX racing.

Following a period of three years where extensive tests have been undertaken, the decision to proceed with disc use has long been expected. Technically in “trial” phase since the close of the 2015 racing season, many arguments for and against have emerged over the course of the tests.

Only last year the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés lawyers sent the UCI a “legal warning” relating to renewed use of disc brakes in the pro peleton.

A further stumbling block in the road came in April of 2016 when Movistar rider Fran Ventoso notoriously claimed injury due to a disc rotor.

The ruling will now see an amendment made to Point 1.3.025 of the UCI Regulations.
