Academic and Consultant to launch new Cycle Market Research

Ian Mitchell and his colleague Tim Roberts and are in the process of developing a research initiative that is aimed at providing insight into market developments and opportunities for cycling brands and retailers in the UK. Ian is a Marketing Lecturer from Manchester Metropolitan University and marketing consultant.

Their project aims to provide a clearer picture of the UK cycling market by looking at levels of bike ownership and usage amongst cycling enthusiasts, as well as future purchase intentions, including servicing needs and choices. Ian and Tim will be attending the press day at the Cycle Show on 27th September, and commented:

“We are interested to hear the perspectives of industry players, particularly around what gaps they have in their knowledge/understanding, and explore whether we can develop our survey to cover some of these areas.”

As many in the industry will know, there is a wide range of research and data on the UK cycling market, from a variety of sources; with only some of it in the public domain. Aggregate sales data is often based on Government import statistics, and participation levels of Department of Transport surveys. This is supplemented by industry surveys from the likes of UK Cycling and others.

CI.N’s own 2018 Independent Retail Channel Study provides in depth analysis of buying and investment trends, including data on which bike brands are in the ascendancy, average sales price trends, non product investments, salaries, shop opening and closures and plenty more.
