Fizik intro the Ergolace GTX; a triple-layered, all weather, trail shoe
With a Northern Hemisphere winter just round the corner, Fizik has launched a triple-layered, all weather, trail shoe – the Ergolace GTX and Ergolace GTX Flat.
Designed as a storm proof, adventure-ready ‘go to’, the Ergolace GTX is said to have been created with alpine tours, sessioning trails, and escaping for an after-work ride, all in mind. ‘Versatile’ is the word, thanks, in part, to the shoe’s triple-layered, waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex membrane.
A hard-wearing ripstop woven fabric upper is spec’d with the fabrics resistant to abrasion and tearing, while a PU-laminated toecap and side reinforcements are there to add targeted protection and durability. For increased comfort, and a secure fit, the Ergolace GTX features an ergonomic, off centre, lacing pattern which the brand points out has been optimized to cradle the foot.
1 shoes, 2 options
Available in clip-in and flat-pedal versions, both shoes feature what Fizik calls its X2 outsole, designed to enhance the versatility of what is, at heart, an all-mountain shoe. X2 has, the brand states, been engineered to deliver an optimal balance between efficient pedalling performance and comfort off the bike.
A compressed EVA midsole delivers stability and cushioning, while the Vibram rubber tread, featuring a directional lug pattern designed for confident footing, ensures grip and traction, whatever the conditions. Just as with tyres, the tread design features a spacing and depth to bite into softer soil, whilst the unique compound is also said to be ideal for gripping slick rocks while hiking.
- The flat-pedal version features a low-profile, tapered tread pattern on the midsole that allows for an immediate, optimal connection with the pedal pins.
- The clip-in version meanwhile, features an extended cleat track which provides more setback and greater flexibility of cleat placement.
Function and fashion
Fizik states it has also designed the Ergolace GTX specifically to reduce bulk, avoiding the puffy look often associated with mountain biking shoes, offering a shoe that’s ready to blend back into society when backcountry shredding is done.
Whilst CIN is ill placed to make any meaningful comment on aesthetics (if you’ve seen how we dress, you’ll know why) there’s no denying the Ergolace GTX sports a look which is currently in vogue – think ‘love child of Swiss running shoe and French trail shoe’. If in doubt, there’s always the, ‘would I wear them to the pub’ test, which, we’d say they pass with flying colours (just remember; never, ever, ask CIN for style advice 😉)
In the UK Fizik is distributed by Extra UK.
