Valeo’s motor and 7-speed auto gearbox enters production

Valeo has announced OEM availability of its 48V electric motor and 7-speed automatic, adaptive gearbox, launching alongside e-bikes from 14 brands which have the first of its kind 48V unit fitted.

Valeo is keen to emphasis that the electric assistance system is suitable for a wide range of bikes, and will initially be found across trekking, mountain and cargo bikes.

For bike brands and retailers, the most important element of the announcement may well be the enabling of service and maintenance of the drivetrain system; Valeo will be rolling out technical assistance, supporting networks chosen by bike manufacturers.

For those not familiar with Valeo, the French business, which started in 1923, is a world-leading global automotive supplier, operating in 33 countries and partnering with automakers worldwide.

As mobility continues to expand, a number of auto manufacturers, suppliers to the auto industry, importers, and retailers, have entered the space, either thought acquisitions or technical partnerships. With the value of e-mobility (excluding BEV) predicated to reach 40 million units, generating €19 billion, in 2023*, this trend will only intensify. An accurate reflection of this seismic shift in transport is the presence of motor vehicle and bicycle manufacturers, collectively participating under the new ‘mobility’ heading of the 2021 IAA show.
