Giant Group founder King Liu passes away at 93

Giant Group founder King Liu passed away on 16 February at the age of 93.

Liu founded Giant Group in Taiwan in 1972. In a statement, the company said that through his commitment to quality and long-term vision, Giant Group rose to the global stage and helped the world “recognise the strength and capability of Taiwan’s bicycle industry”.

Liu was also regarded as a lifelong advocate of cycling culture and a deeply influential figure among riders. In 2007, Giant Group sponsored the Taiwanese film Island Etude, whose message of “do it now or never” resonated widely. Inspired by the film, Liu, then aged 73, completed a 15-day ride around Taiwan, further amplifying public interest in cycling. Since then, he actively promoted a “New Cycling Culture” centred on health, personal challenge and meaningful social connection, helping to position cycling as both a lifestyle choice and a shared identity in Taiwan.

Prior to the trip, he said: “At my age, if I don’t cycle around Taiwan now, I probably never will. So I asked my team and the Cycling Culture Foundation to help arrange the itinerary.”

Under Liu’s leadership, Giant Group became one of the world’s leading bicycle manufacturers, with production facilities in Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Hungary and the Netherlands. The company currently employs 13,695 people worldwide, supported by nine manufacturing facilities across its global network. With operations spanning 75 countries and 15 sales locations, the group maintains a broad international footprint. Its total capital stands at TWD 3,921 million, and the business oversees four subsidiary brands.

Giant Group added that further arrangements will be made in accordance with the family’s wishes and announced at an appropriate time.
