Hyena of Taiwan breaks cover as eBike systems provider to big names

A challenger eBike drive systems provider based out of Taiwan turned heads at the recent Eurobike show, revealing itself to be a supplier to several top tier bike labels seeking hub geared systems and IoT functionality.

Providing systems suitable for city, trekking and road/gravel use, Hyena has come to market with an ultra-connected drive and software ecosystem that is delivered with the backing of over a hundred team members with specialist expertise brought from the electronics industry.

A relatively young company in the eBike space, debuting only at this year’s Taipei Cycle show in Taiwan, that hasn’t stopped the product featuring with brands such as Cannondale, among other high volume brands. Speaking to CI.N, the brand says that it has focused its attention on Europe and the USA, seen as “market leaders” for electric bike volumes.

Connected with a plush dealer service application, a consumer facing smartphone app, as well as functionality for manufacturers to optimise supply chain mapping, product traceability, and market-end analysis “technology plus software integration is Hyena’s most important feature,” explained Shawn Lin at Hyena.

“Our strength and core technology are in the controlling, driving, and system integration. We do not only provide off-the-shelf or ODM e-bike drive system units, but also provide complete solutions including software with cloud Digi-eco system also e-bike services,” he added.

Hyena’s latest product to launch came last year and targets the eRoad, eGravel and urban bike space. This system is tipping the scales at shy of 4kg and like its competitors, some priority is placed on a compact shell. Inside the hub motor is hardware capable of delivering 40Nm of torque, while a slimline 250Wh battery is easily integrated into frames.

An upgraded version of the E-Road drive system unit, with the ISIS torque sensor, range extender compatibility and a new HMI, will also be released this year. The first units will be delivered to some Hyena’s long-term cooperative partners with a view to appearing on model year 24/25 eBikes.

For OEMs looking toward the Taiwan firm for motor supply, Shawn concludes by flagging the company’s end-to-end traceability, stating “all the Hyena drive system-powered eBikes are supported by our software applications throughout their whole lifespan. From the moment Hyena’s components are manufactured, integrated into the bike as a drive system unit, until the e-bikes hit the market, they are always traceable.

“We have implemented smart manufacturing applications in electronic parts and eBike manufacturers to ensure each eBike and drive system is produced to the correct specifications, correct firmware for specific bike performance, and ready to market.”

In case you missed it: Having taken over full control of Fazua, Porsche has now launched an eBike company with its branding on the motors.
