Online specialist Planet X closes its last bricks and mortar retail outlet
Yorkshire-based online pioneer Planet X has recently closed its last remaining retail store on the Sheffield-Rotherham border. The company, which also designs and sells bikes under the Holdsworth, Viner, Titus and On-One brand names, posted a short statement on its website about the recent closure.
“As our lease has come to an end, it is a natural point to close our last remaining retail store and focus 100% of our effort upon selling online to our growing customer base. All of our fantastic team have been relocated to our central distribution centre and our Sheffield Store is now closed.”
The company will now operate from one large distribution warehouse, after once also occupying two large units beside the M1 motorway and a second showroom in Barnsley which was closed in 2016. The company began a cost cutting drive during 2016 which resulted in the loss of over 20 staff and a reported switch to hiring contract workers via an employment agency.
In June, Planet X reported that it had improved it’s profitability and become debt-free following the period of restructuring. None of the company’s brands were represented at the recent NEC Cycle Show, as they have previously, and it remains unclear whether UK customers will be able to view the company’s product ranges before purchasing, in future.
