Ljubljana to host Velo-city 2020

Ljubljana has been announced as the next host of Velo-city 2020, as the curtain falls on 2019’s event in Dublin.

ECF President Christophe Najdovski made the announcement from the stage of this year’s event, and revealed the theme ‘Smart Cycling Inclusion’ for next years conference, 2-5 June 2020.

Velo-city 2020, initially scheduled to take place in Mexico City, has changed host cities to Ljubljana after a unanimous decision to terminate the contact for Velo-city Mexico due to “external reasons, unforeseeable at the time of selection.”

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a quickly developing city with a clear vision to create multi-purpose, shared spaces and put quality of life at the forefront. Velo-city 2020 Ljubljana will aim to disseminate high-quality information on cycling, showcase global best practices, integrate cycling into relevant policy sectors and encourage the greater use of cycling.

ECF Velo-city Series and Global Policies Director, Marcio Deslandes, said: “We are very happy to have Velo-city in Ljubljana in 2020! The city has a lot to teach about shared space and making cities more liveable and inclusive.”

The conference attracts academic experts, decision makers, local, regional and national governments, international institutions, civil society organisations and local cycling associations to network and exchange ideas from the cycling world.

Zoran Janković, Mayor of Ljubljana, added: “I am pleased that Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, which is committed to sustainable development, is hosting such an important bicycle conference.

“We are proud that international experts have recognised our progress in the field of cycling, and that the European Cyclists’ Federation has entrusted us with the organisation of this meeting, where we will highlight the latest activities, guidelines and measures in the field of bicycling in the cities.”

World Bicycle Day will take place on 3rd June next year, the day of the bike parade at Velo-city 2020.
