National Cycle Network to gain Bosch eBike chargers

Sustrans has announced a partnership with Bosch eBike Systems to begin the rollout of chargers at key National Cycle Network destinations.

Already present on mainland Europe, the Powerstations are sought-after pieces of infrastructure, in particular where cycle tourism is prominent, each enabling electric bike riders to cut out range anxiety on long-distance rides.

It will take around one hour to boost a Bosch eBike battery to around 80% charged and there is no need for riders to bring their cables as part of the service. The chargers, at present, rely on the bike offering a detachable battery in order that users can stash the cells in a secure locker during the charge process.

The UK’s first phase begins with six charge stations to be installed at the following locations:

The charging infrastructure will be free to use, though will only be compatible with electric bikes sporting Bosch batteries. Future phases of the charge network will aim to add compatibility to other systems prominent in the marketplace.

Xavier Brice, Sustrans’ CEO said of the development: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with Bosch eBikes. By installing charging stations across the National Cycle Network, we are delivering our shared-vision for a UK-wide network of traffic-free paths, connecting cities, towns and countryside, loved by the communities they serve.”

Chris Astle, UK Marketing Manager, Bosch eBike Systems, added: “Working with Sustrans to continue to roll out eBike charging across the UK was a natural decision for us.

“We’re delighted to have the opportunity to develop the National Cycle Network and make these amazing routes accessible to everyone.

“I can’t wait to see more eBike riders and their families get active and explore the British countryside in new ways with support from these charging stations.”

Having trimmed its network in 2020 on safety grounds, the Sustrans’ charity now is partly responsible for maintaining 12,739 miles of signed routes criss-crossing the country.
