Specialized extends earlier battery recall further

Specialized has announced that it will go further on its earlier battery pack recall, announced in May, by extending the scope to cover additional battery part numbers and manufacturing dates.

Susceptible to water ingress, a portion of the battery packs could become unstable, potentially causing a short circuit that could bypass protection mechanisms and thus set off a thermal reaction.

The scope of the recall now includes:

MODEL YEAR CATEGORY MODEL
2016-2018 LEVO LEVO FSR
2018-2021 LEVO LEVO HT
2018-2019 KENEVO KENEVO FSR
2016-2021 PART SPECIALIZED M1 BATTERY

For mechanics asked to verify battery packs, the identification numbers are found on a label affixed to each battery pack. The battery pack must be removed from the bike using a 6mm hex wrench to read the sticker, which shows the Made in China stamp.

The expanded list of numbers to be on the look out for include B9JM2041F, B9JM2042F, B9JE2055F, B9JE2064F and B9J2077F. Originally the recall affected numbers B9JE2045F, B9JE2056F, B9JE2065F, B9JE2076F and B9JE2098F.

Consumers who are affected are encouraged to return the bike to an official dealer and only ride the eBike if dry in order to reduce down the charge level. Once the charge level is sub 50% Specialized suggest booking a slot with their local authorised dealer for a replacement. It is strongly recommended that no cleaning take place on bikes with affected batteries.
